At the end of March, during the Delaware School Counselor’s Conference, elementary schools across the state received copies of “I’m Not Scared, I’m Prepared,” and the accompanying activity workbook, in an effort to provide these schools with materials to better prepare elementary students for violent intruder situations. These books were provided by Director Wendy Hudson and Deputy Director Joey Melvin of the Delaware Comprehensive School Safety Plan (CSSP), which was created to enhance plans in all public and charter schools in the state. The “I’m Not Scared, I’m Prepared” books were written to help instruct young students on best practices concerning violent intruder events.

In their release, CSSP stated, “We are providing copies of “I’m Not Scared, I’m Prepared” to all elementary schools in Delaware to assist with teaching our young students on best practices regarding intruders. The topic of intruders can be scary, but with education comes empowerment and a comfort when prepared. Julia Cook utilized best practices in line with the federally recommended RUN-HIDE-FIGHT response to violent intruders to write “I’m Not Scared, I’m Prepared” for our young students.” Furthermore, “CSSP recognizes that because students are accustomed to the step-by-step ways that schools typically function, it is important to show them that there is no singular response to a dynamic event such as an intruder in a school.”

ALICE Training would like to thank CSSP for showing true leadership and taking proactive steps in making schools a safer place throughout Delaware!
