Summer school is different from the traditional school day, but the safety measures are not. Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate are not sequential. However, at a school in Green Bay, Wisconsin, a parent took an Alert seriously and informed the staff that she saw an armed intruder on June 23, 2014. The school responded using ALICE strategies. The students and staff completed enhanced barricades and hunkered down in the classrooms while others evacuated. According to District Executive Director of Pupil Services, Barbara Dorff, “tables, chairs, filing cabinets, whatever were pushed up against the door to make it more secure. Until the police can get there.”
The students waited for police to arrive and were safely escorted room by room. The intercom system was used to Alert, and continue to Inform, the occupants of the building. The shooter then abandoned the weapon and left the building upon hearing the announcements. Nobody was hurt. The suspect was arrested, and a pellet gun was found in the school. All of the students and staff were safe in summer school that day.
