In less than a minute, most of Smithville High School’s sophomore class had cleared its section of the building, gathering at points near Commercial Avenue. The remainder of the students were in their classrooms, barricaded behind stacks of books and desks. None of the students or staff was in any danger the afternoon of Thursday, March 31. They were simply participating in school security training, which provides the option of fleeing an active shooter, barricading a classroom or fighting back. “I thought it went very well,” Assistant Principal Chris Heslinga said. “The teachers had informed the kids what to do.” Read more
