Active shooter training took place and the training scenario, involving eight Bellingham police officers, exposed students to the ALICE program (alert, lockdown, inform, counter, evacuate). Instead of hiding, Officer Leonard Gosselin said, ALICE teaches them to barricade doors, find ways to communicate important information to law enforcement, distract or disarm the attacker, and, if possible, escape. “This is a lot more proactive,” Kevin McNamara, a social studies teacher and former U.S. Marine said of the training. “It’s teaching us to protect ourselves.
