ALICE instructor Kenny Mayberry took defense training to the classroom last week at Merrol-Hyde Magnet School for a hands-on demonstration of tactics to survive an active shooter situation. The acronym “ALICE” means alert, lockdown, inform, counter and evacuate, a policy that instructors are now taking to schools and businesses in light of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in December 2012. “That’s the incident that made us look at our safety plans,” said Jill Welbern, a school nurse at Hendersonville Christian Academy. “That was when we implemented a safety team and started going to trainings.” Read more
