New data released by the FBI shows active shooter incidents have more than doubled over the past seven years. “Unfortunately they happen more frequently than we like and there’s been a bit of an uptick in recent years,” said Tom Tucker, Director of School Police Services for Springfield Public Schools. The Springfield Public School district has had an active shooter and lockdown plan in place for more than a decade. School resource officers say they use the popular “ALICE” program to model their staff training after. “ALICE stands for Alert Lockdown Inform Counter and Evacuate. We go through each step of ALICE. We also talk about a history of school shootings,” Tucker explained. “The principles we teach in the ALICE programs will transfer to any of those settings as far as what you can do if you’re ever unfortunately caught in one of those events outside of a school,” said Tucker.
