The district will begin work on a new safety plan that will change how school staff members are supposed to respond in a case involving armed intruders, moving away from a “traditional lockdown procedure” toward an “active response” [ALICE] that could involve evacuation or countering an intruder. School officials, including board member Alana Havenstrite, also took part in a recent active response training exercise in La Crosse’s former Roosevelt Elementary, and Havenstrite expressed strong support for redrawing the district’s safety protocols. “I am happy that we are going this route,” she said. “I think it’s a really good thing for us.” Read more
