Plum School District resource Officer Mark Kost last week told board members about training he received this summer in the ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate) program. ALICE is a set of procedures school staff and students can perform to try to increase the chance of surviving an attack by an armed intruder. “The program makes sense,” Kost told board members during an education committee meeting. If evacuation is not an option, the ALICE instruction dictates barricading a room during a lockdown and countering — creating noise, movement, distance and distraction — with the intent of reducing the shooter’s ability to shoot accurately. “Lockdown is good,” Kost said. “Evacuation is better.” Read more
