The Piqua Police Department teamed up with sheriff departments from Miami and Shelby Counties Wednesday. They are training teachers to use the Alice technique in the event of an active shooter in school. Alice stands for–alert, lockdown, inform, counter and evacuate. “We started looking around for things to barricade, ‘we need blinds on this windows’ ‘boy would it be great if there would be an extra door jam in here’, you know ‘how dark would it get if we closed our blinds.’  so it was very important to be in a real setting where they are with their children to think about all these details,” said Liz Schonoveer, Early Childhood Services Director. Instructors say instinct is key in teachers protecting students and themselves.
