Nearly 400 South Dakota High School Junior girls piled into Alf’s Auditorium at USD to learn a difficult lesson: how to responde to active shooter or mass shooting scenarios. “Five years ago, I didn’t even think about it. It’s “that’d never happen to me.” Hopefully, it never does,” said Lt. Burgeson. He now teaches the ALICE Training active shooter program. ALICE stands for alert, lockdown, inform, counter and evacuate. “Law enforcement can’t be everywhere, all the time so most the time, and what you’re going to see, is active shooter situations are stopped by the people that are there,” said Lt. Burgeson.
