Wilmington Public Schools was one of the earliest districts in the state to adopt the ALICE protocol. ALICE, an acronym for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate, is to be used in the unlikely event of an armed intruder entering a school in town. Training included presentations, discussions, and running actual drills based on different scenarios. Last year, elementary school staff, parents and students were trained, with students receiving what he called “scaled down,” age-appropriate instruction. Each school in the district will continue to train on ALICE protocols at least once a year. “The district’s training has been so successful that we have allowed administrators and police from other communities to observe our school-wide trainings,” Director of School Administration and Finance Paul Ruggiero said.
