With School Safety, Waltham Promotes Proactive Response

Waltham’s new safety plan, A.L.I.C.E, is supposed to increase chances of survival in the event of an armed intruder incident at school. Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate are the principles students and faculty are supposed to follow. The new approach replaces previous tactics, which included hiding in the classrooms and turning off the lights. School resource officer Kristin Tracey said students and teachers at the high school, both middle schools and Northeast Elementary School have received A.L.I.C.E. trainings involving mock intruder drills. She says they’re happy with the rollout and she’s happy with the trainings. More are likely to take place in the next month or so. Read more
