Teachers Face Shooters in Training Session

As the pounding of gunshots echoed through the hallways of Harding High School, teachers did what they had been taught for years: turn off the lights and hide in the corner. City school employees learned why that is a bad idea during the school district’s active shooter training session. The Marion Police Department partnered with local law enforcement agencies to showcase proper protocol during a crisis situation. “Our goal was to make our schools safer,” said Maj. Jeff Clewell. “The only option previously was to lock down. ALICE gives them a lot more options.” “I think it’s very important that they know it’s not just about hiding anymore,” she said. “The first thought is get out; we’re not going to let somebody try to come at us.
