While safety has always been a key concern for Viroqua Area School District administrators, they have been steeped in the subject since moving to adopt new ALICE protocol for the district this year. Administrative staff, teachers and substitute teachers have already had instruction in ALICE. Students will begin to receive training in early 2015, Principal Kathy Klos said. An ALICE plan is a more proactive approach than just a “lockdown” and it allows for numerous ways instructors and students can protect themselves in the midst of an armed attack on the facility. The Viroqua School District sent Rieber and Viroqua High School Dean of Students Eric Anderson to ALICE training at CESA No. 3 in Fennimore in late October with Viroqua Police Officer Jeff Walburn. “After 15 or 20 minutes into the training and Eric and I were hooked…,” Rieber said. “In just 15 minutes, we knew it was better than what we already had.” Read more
