Watkins Memorial High School – Pataskala, OH

For one of the first times in the state of Ohio, students on Friday practiced barricading themselves inside Watkins Memorial High School classrooms in response to pretend gunmen walking up and down the school’s hallways. It marked the first time a Southwest Licking Local Schools building offered so-called ALICE training to its students. ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evaluate) training instructs participants how to best respond to armed intruders in schools. “We’re just trying to do what we can do to keep our kids safe,” said Watkins Principal Ben Richards, describing the school’s motivation for offering the training.
