Officials at two Black Hawk County higher education institutions say they have taken steps to prepare for a crisis like Thursday’s fatal shooting at a rural Oregon community college. “We have a safety protocol in place. We have an emergency response protocol in place — not just one but many, depending on what the situation is,” said Scott Ketelsen, public relations director for the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. ” Having UNI police on campus as a campus presence is huge.”In addition, ALICE training is offered to staff and faculty. ALICE stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate. “We’ve strongly encouraged faculty to attend this training, and at this time we’ve had well over half of employees take that training,” said Beckman, noting it’s offered on an ongoing basis.
