The South Side Area School District’s approach to school security drastically changed after the December 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Conn. The school board and district administrative team had a “candid’ discussion about security in the rural district, which doesn’t have a local police department, Superintendent Tammy Adams said.  South Side hired Richard Pritchard as district police chief in July 2013 to oversee all aspects of campus safety and security, including active shooter response training for all district employees, Adams said. As a trained instructor in the Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate program, or ALICE, Pritchard trains staff — and South Side’s high school students, starting this school year — to think critically in the event of an intruder. The district provides ALICE training for employees and student drills are kept age appropriate, Central Valley Superintendent Nicholas Perry said.
