In another Monday meeting report, board members were also briefed on A.L.I.C.E procedures, which train school officials and sometimes students, on “active shooter” policies. A.L.I.C.E is an acronym for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate. Sgt. Kevin Burke with the South Dakota Highway Patrol explained the guidelines from the ALICE Institute. The organization promotes proactive strategies to improve the chances of survival during an active shooter event. Burke has presented to other Northern Hills schools, and said specific programs are up to the district. Some districts only train school boards, others train faculty and staff, and some decide to train students with the procedures. Read more
