ALICE stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate and is to be utilized in the case of an armed intruder in any of the district’s buildings. ALICE training began at the beginning of the school year. “It’s an enhancement of what we currently do with the lockdown,” said Joel Heuer, liaison officer for the district who is overseeing the training. Studies from school shootings the past 25 years have shown that lockdown isn’t a “one-size-fits-all” approach to an armed intruder. Instead staff learn how to evacuate, communicate what parts of a building are safe and unsafe, how to barricade themselves in a room, how to effectively break a window and administer first aid.
